Plate III · a navigator's handbook

First steps

Stonia is played in text: you read what is around you and type what you do. This plate takes you from your first connection to your first hard-won levels, with the real commands to type along the way.

Lines that start with > are commands you type in the game. Words in <angle brackets> are yours to fill in.

1Leg 1 / 8

Connect

Set your bearing on the harbour.

Address and port

smud.sinilumi.ee 4000

Any MUD client will do - most Stonia players use JMC (Jaba Mud Client) on Windows or powwow in a terminal; Mudlet, TinTin++ and MUSHclient work too, and so does plain telnet:

$ telnet smud.sinilumi.ee 4000

In a client, make a new connection with host smud.sinilumi.ee and port 4000. Which client to choose.

2Leg 2 / 8

Account and character

Choose your flag before you sail.

  1. Make an account. One account holds several characters, but only one of them can be in the game at a time.
  2. Make a character: pick a race, then a class. The race decides your skin, and your skin decides your friends and enemies. Whities and blackies are enemies; brownies may help anyone but ghosts; ghosts help no one.
  3. At the character list, sort puts your characters in the order you like. help sort explains how.
Plate II

Fighting and surviving

The world is cruel. A combat round comes every 2 seconds.

> consider <mob> -- always first: can you take it?
> kill <mob> -- only then
> flee -- when it goes wrong

wimpy

Flee on your own below a hit-point limit you set, at most half your hp. From level 51 it never fires against players.

recall · hometown

The way back towards home when you are lost or hurt.

light

Make a fire. Ghosts fear fire, and the old notices say it cooks corpses too.

From the 1990s notices: “DeathTraps are DeathTraps ... no comments.”

7Leg 7 / 8

Staying out of trouble

Hazards to navigation.

30 crime points means realdeath. They add up, so take these seriously.
  • No multiplaying. One character in the game at a time.
  • Wait 3 minutes before logging in a character of another skin. No spying.
  • Never share passwords.
  • Report bugs, never abuse them. A crash bug reported can earn you a level.
  • No spamming, no robots, no equipment sharing between your own characters, no repeated killing of your own skin.
