Plate VIII - the boats

Choose your boat

Stonia is all text, so anything that speaks telnet will carry you there. A real MUD client makes the voyage kinder: scrollback, logs, aliases and colour - most Stonia players sail with JMC.

What Stonia's players sail with

Generations of Stonia players have used these two: JMC on Windows, powwow in a Unix terminal.

JMC

Jaba Mud Client · Windows

The Stonia classic

The most common way to play Stonia: a light Windows client with triggers (actions), aliases, colours, logging and sounds.

Downloads kept by Ranka on ranka.ee/stonia, with notes on Ranka's version.

  1. Unpack the .rar file - with WinRAR or the free 7-Zip.
  2. Start JMC.exe from the JMC folder.
  3. Type:#connect smud.sinilumi.ee 4000
  4. All commands and help: the JMC command manual.
WindowsWine on Linux/macOS

powwow

Unix, Linux, macOS terminal

Made for DikuMUDs

The terminal client that replaces telnet "for the lazy mudder": actions, aliases, macros and a status line, built for DikuMUDs like Stonia. Small, fast, and at home on any server shell.

  1. Install it from your system's packages where it is offered, or build it from the source on its home page.
  2. Connect straight from the shell:powwow smud.sinilumi.ee 4000
  3. Inside powwow, commands start with #; #help lists them.

More MUD clients

More good boats

All three are free. Menus move between versions, so if a step looks different, look for the same idea: a new connection with a host and a port.

Mudlet

Modern

A modern graphical client with scripting, triggers and maps.

  1. Download it from mudlet.org and install.
  2. In the connection window, make a new profile.
  3. Server address smud.sinilumi.ee, port 4000.
  4. Connect - then make an account at the prompt.

TinTin++

For the terminal

A fast text-mode client that lives in your terminal; on Windows it comes as WinTin++.

  1. Install it from tintin.mudhalla.net or your package manager.
  2. Start it with tt++.
  3. Open a session:#session smud smud.sinilumi.ee 4000

MUSHclient

Windows

A long-standing Windows client with triggers, aliases and plugins.

  1. Download it from gammon.com.au and install.
  2. File menu, New World.
  3. Give it a name, the address smud.sinilumi.ee and port 4000.
  4. Save and connect.
Windows

No client at all

Plain telnet

The way Stonia was first played. No colours to set up, no scrollback beyond your terminal's own - but it works.

Windows

Command prompt
  1. The telnet client is an optional Windows feature: turn on "Telnet Client" under Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open a command prompt and type:telnet smud.sinilumi.ee 4000

macOS

Terminal
  1. Newer macOS versions no longer include telnet. Install it (for example with Homebrew: brew install telnet), then:telnet smud.sinilumi.ee 4000
  2. Or, without installing anything, netcat works in a pinch:nc smud.sinilumi.ee 4000

Linux

Terminal
  1. Install the telnet package from your distribution if it is missing.
  2. Then:telnet smud.sinilumi.ee 4000

Netcat doesn't speak the telnet protocol itself, so the odd character may look strange; for real play a MUD client is kinder.

Keeping a log

Write the voyage down

A great fight, a death you want to understand, a bug you need to prove - all of it is easier with a log. Save the session to a text file, then share it on LogStation for others to read and comment on.

  • Mudlet: has a built-in session logger - look for its log toggle, or see its manual.
  • TinTin++: #log append smud.log starts, #log off stops.
  • MUSHclient: File menu, Log Session.
  • Plain telnet on macOS or Linux: the script command records everything:script smud.logthen telnet as usual, and exit when you are done.

LogStation

upload
  • Paste the text or upload the file.txt / .log
  • Colour codes are stripped for youANSI
  • At most 3 MB per log3 MB
  • Needs an account - ask an immortal in the gameinvite

Tips

Before you cast off

Small things that save a character.

Turn scrollback up

Fights scroll fast. Give your client or terminal a big scrollback buffer so you can read back what just hit you.

Log by habit

Start logging when you log in, not when something happens - by then the interesting part is already gone.

One character at a time

Never open two connections with two characters - that is multiplaying. Switching to another skin? Wait 3 minutes first.

No robots

Triggers and aliases are fine while you play. A script that plays while you are away from the keyboard costs 9 crime points.
